Tempe, AZ – McClintock Pool is reopening to the public on July 15 with new morning lap swim and evening open swim hours. To celebrate, the community is invited to a free reopening event on July 29 to witness Mayor Mark Mitchell and several City Councilmembers jump back in.

Renovations at the pool started in January. It now features increased depth for diving, an ADA-accessible entry, updated equipment and more. McClintock Pool is located at 1830 E. Del Rio Drive, on the campus of McClintock High School.

McClintock Pool was constructed in 1964 and first remodeled in 1996. During the economic downturn, the pool was closed for public swim in 2010. Tempe Union High School District and local swim clubs continued to use the pool for physical education classes, swim team practice and regional swim team competitions.

During 2016 budget discussions, the City Council had expressed that reopening McClintock Pool to the public was important, as was renovating it for better access and usage opportunities.

Mitchell said he looks forward to celebrating with the community – including jumping in to the cool and refreshing water of McClintock Pool.

“The McClintock Pool has been important part of the lives of thousands of individuals who grew up in Tempe and learned to swim in its waters. My Council colleagues and I recognized that this is an asset that we should protect and keep for future generations – that’s why we invested the funding to bring this longtime community attraction back online,” he said. “I can remember summer pool parties at McClintock Pool with friends and family. I’m so happy other families will have those same opportunities.”

The free community celebration happens Saturday, July 29, at 5:30 p.m. with a brief dedication with the Mayor and City Councilmembers. There will be free activities and treats, as well as free admission to the open swim time from 6-9 p.m. that night.
