TEMPE, Ariz. – All Aboard! The exciting and interactive Trains of Tempe exhibit rolls into the Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave. next week. The 1,200 square foot exhibit examines the history of trains in Tempe and the surrounding communities from earliest efforts to bring rail service to the area, to the modern endeavors in mass transportation, including light rail and street car.

Exhibit goers will enjoy a 3-dimensional experience created through the use of artifacts and archival materials, photographs and video, several of which are on loan from the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler and/or private collectors.

Trains of Tempe offers engaging displays and activities for visitors of all ages including:

  • Interactive computer station featuring a GIS Story Map that showcases the former sites of train stations and bridges in Tempe
  • Learn about a train robbery, Prisoners of War, the mule-drawn Goodwin Trolley and more from actual newspaper accounts and photographs
  • Climb aboard a train engine, dress up in train worker garb and snap a selfie or stop by the telegraph station to send and receive messages in Morse Code

The exhibit opens at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10. The community will enjoy live American Roots music performed by Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold, a visit from Arizona’s Official State Historian Marshall Trimble, activities for the whole family, refreshments and more.  Admission is free.
