Tempe Police: 16 Arrested in Prostitution Sting

Targeting human trafficking; average age of entry into prostitution: 14.83 years

Post Date:07/16/2014 1:42 PM

Tempe Police Special Investigations, Special Victims, Tactical Response, Gangs, and Technical Unit Detectives recently concluded a proactive demand reduction vice operation resulting in 16 arrests on July 8-9, 2014, on various charges including Soliciting Prostitution, Indecent Exposure and Drug Possession (see attached booking photos).

The arrests were made at a local hotel near the intersection of Priest Drive and Baseline Road and the arrestees’ ages range from 27 to 71.

Tempe PD works closely with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, City of Tempe Prosecutor’s Office, partner law enforcement agencies, and the local hospitality industry to go after traffickers, pimps and the consumers who pay for and perpetuate the demand for this exploitation industry.

Though this operation targeted adult prostitution, it is important to note that illicit prostitution is often tied to many other violent and organized crimes to include adult human trafficking, domestic minor human trafficking (DMST), robbery, and narcotics.

According to Lt. Scott Smith, “Studies demonstrate a majority of sexually exploited persons enter into the sex trade as minors and are often coerced or forced to engage in acts of prostitution by pimps or traffickers.  It is believed the average age of entry into prostitution in Phoenix is approximately 14.83 years of age.  Targeting demand is part of a larger strategy by Arizona law enforcement to keep our communities safe.”

The Tempe Police Department remains committed to this enforcement effort and warns anyone who is engaged – or may consider engaging - in this type of conduct in Tempe that if caught, they will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
