TEMPE, Ariz. -- Make your summer the Summer of Love at Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA,) 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. The Gallery at TCA offers a summer family art exhibition featuring endearing artworks about the many faces of love created by local and national artists. Visit the Summer of Love: Family, Friendship and Devotion art exhibition taking place now through Sept. 20.
Featured artworks include ceramic sculptures, botanical prints and drawings, original children’s book illustrations and contemporary paintings and installations. The exhibition also features historical and contemporary displays about symbols of love by the Desert Botanical Garden Archives, Tempe History Museum and Bobbie’s Flowers of Tempe. Admission to the Gallery at TCA is free.
Take the entire family to the exhibition on select Saturdays and create art with some of the talented TCA staff members and artists participating in the exhibition. The workshops are free and everyone takes home a piece of art. Workshops happen from noon-2 p.m. on most Saturdays through the summer. There's no need to register, just stop by. All ages are welcome. July 12 - Home is Where the Heart is with Sarah Chelton
Artist and Corona del Sol art teacher Sarah Chelton joins the TCA team this summer and leads a summer valentine cards and ornaments project using old maps, colored tissue paper and a personal Polaroid picture. The whole family will enjoy making and giving these special gifts as mementos of family, friendship and devotion.
July 26 - Handmade Lovebird Sketch Books with Frank Gonzales
TCA staff member Frank Gonzales is a painter and bird lover at heart. In this workshop, participants of all ages will create small hand sewn sketch books from yarn, thread, paper and scratchboard. Gonzales will share his love of ornithology (the study of birds) and botany (the study of plants) to help participants create miniature drawings of lovebirds on the covers of their handmade books.
Aug. 2 - Steampunk Owls with Michelle Dock
Join TCA staff member Michelle Dock on a steampunk project that will get you and your child’s brain gears moving. Dock enjoys finding vintage treasures and antiques at second-hand stores and antique shops. In this whimsical workshop, participants of all ages will be using recycled materials such as CD cases, bottle caps and nuts and bolts as well as vintage buttons, jewelry and watch parts to create self-standing artworks.
Aug. 9 - This Bouquet is For You with Veronica Rascona
In Victorian times, flowers symbolized different feelings such as love, friendship and remembrance. Join TCA staff member Veronica Rascona to create your own special bouquet of colorful tissue paper flowers to give to someone special. Participants of all ages will learn about botanical symbolism and finish their own floral arrangements with hand written notes to add an extra layer of meaning to each bouquet.
