Tempe’s upcoming programming session helps you make the most of summer months

TEMPE, Ariz. – The City of Tempe invites individuals and families to try a new activity, re-visit an old hobby, start a fitness routine or spend time with friends and loved ones this summer through a multitude of activities and classes offered during the Community Services Department’s Summer 2014 programming session. Course topics include: Adapted Recreation, Aquatics, Arts and Crafts, Boating, Books and Reading, Business and Computers, Dance, Music and Theater, Family Activities, Health and Fitness, Special Interest and Sports. Tempe’s quality programs are available for all ages and abilities at convenient times, locations and affordable prices.

The Summer 2014 Tempe Opportunities Brochure, complete with course descriptions and schedules, can be picked up at city facilities or viewed online at www.Tempe.gov/Brochure. Registration for Tempe residents is now available. Non-Tempe residents may begin registering for classes at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 28. Registration can be completed in-person at a City of Tempe recreation facility, via mail, by fax or online with a major credit card.

Most classes begin the week of June 2, 2014. Here are just a few of Tempe’s new and continuing offerings: 

For Tots (0-5 yrs)
Art Classes
Help your little artist explore the world through colors, shapes and art concepts while building their creative-thinking and fine-motor skills. Choose from parent/child classes such as: Toddler Art Time and Messy Art for Minis. Classes are also available for students who are ready to participate independently.

Musikgarten©; Early Childhood Music and Movement
Children from 1 month to 6-years-old will be introduced to music through singing, musical games, instrument exploration and more through the Musikgarten©; Early Childhood Music and Movement. Parent/child and independent participation classes are available. 

For Youth (5-12 yrs)
Summer Indoor Soccer League
Join the Escalante Center for a slammin’ Summer Indoor Soccer League! Boys and girls ages 5-10 will have a great time learning the game and staying active in this non-competitive league.

I Can Cook!
Youth ages 8-12 will love the independence that cooking offers, while learning how to create edible masterpieces! In our I Can Cook! workshop series, your child will learn basic baking chemistry, kitchen safety, how to mix and measure ingredients and more! 

For Teens (12-18 yrs)
Boating
Our Youth Kayaking and Youth Stand-up Paddling programs for ages 10-18 will give students the opportunity to learn a new sport or improve their current skills. Both programs will focus on stroke technique and fitness specific to either kayking or paddling, as well as provide and on-the-water training. No experience is necessary.

Wire-Wrapping Classes
Spend your summer getting artsy in our Wire-Wrapping Classes so you can rock a back-to-school look with unique, hand-made jewelry! Students ages 15 yrs+ can learn to create clasps and findings, design their own pieces and much more in classes such as Bead Bracelets and Beginner Techniques and Hoop Earrings. 

For Adults 18+
Dance Classes
Tempe has dance classes for beginning students as well as experienced movers-and-shakers. Feel the beat in Ballroom Bash or Latin Dance, featuring new instructors and exciting new lessons. For dancers looking to tone and build strength, try Belly Dance; Beginning and immerse yourself in enchanting music and rhythms.

Fermenters 101; Arizona Homebrewing Basics
Want to start a delicious new hobby or have dreams of owning your own craft brewery? Fermenters 101; Arizona Homebrewing Basics provides students ages 21 yrs+ with stimulating discussions about home brewing and fermentation basics, with practical instruction on brewing an extract batch of beer.

For Adults 50+
Senior Techs
Adults looking to dive into the world of social media will love Senior Techs: Social Media Showcase. Basic overviews of Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest will be provided; basic computer skills are required.

Aerobic Dance Exercise
Get your feet moving and your heart pumping as you exercise your way through upbeat, choreographed routines. Class encourages flexibility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. 

Family Activities
Martial Arts; Peaceful Warrior – Levels 1, 2 and 3
Classes for ages 6 and older focus on the basic self-defense principles of Karate and Aikijujutsu. Perfect for the entire family to promote bonding, and emphasis is placed on the importance of non-violence, courtesy, respect, and discipline.

Adapted Recreation
Tempe’s Adapted Recreation Program provides a variety of classes, leagues and social events for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Adapted Sportball
Adapted Recreation is excited to partner with the Sportball franchise to provide an array of skill-building opportunities for participants with special needs. Adapted Sportball improves physical and social skills, self-image and self-concept, while developing attention and listening skills. 

Aquatics 
Swim Lessons
Whether you are looking for your child’s first introduction to the water or want to brush up on your swim technique, Tempe offers quality swim lessons at affordable prices for ages and abilities. Classes are offered five days per week at both Escalante outdoor swimming pool and Kiwanis indoor swimming pool.
