  Recreation Classes - Fall 2010 

Adapted Yoga
The class is designed to introduce students to basic sitting and standing Yoga poses that help to increase flexibility, improve balance and stretch the body.  Simple breathing and relaxation techniques will be taught to all participants.  Level 1 uses a smaller learning curve and is a great way to get introduced to yoga; Level 2 is for those with a better understanding of directions and incorporating Yoga techniques.  Late registration accepted if space is available.

FREE DEMONSTRATION!  Thursday, September 9, 5-6pm.  RSVP by calling Josh Bell at 480.858.2469 or e-mail josh_bell@tempe.gov to reserve your spot.  This is a great chance to see what the class is all about!

Get Movin'
You are invited to have fun and get fit to a variety of music in this class that explores a combination of aerobic movement and dance.  Individuals must be independently mobile to participate. Those needing extra supervision must provide his/her own aide.  Late registration accepted if space is available.

  Friday Night Dances & Game Nights 

Fabulous Friday Dances
6:30-9pm, $4 admission
(includes drinks, snacks, entry for door prize drawing)

Dances are held on the second Friday of each month for individuals with disabilities ages 13 years and older.

Karaoke and Nintendo Wii Night!
6:30-9pm
$3 admission

Karaoke and Nintendo Wii Night is held the first Friday of the month (alternates with Bingo Night) for individuals of all ages with disabilities.  Those requiring assistance must come with own aide.

Bingo Night
6:30-8:00pm
$3 admission

Bingo is held the first Friday of the month (alternates with Karaoke night) for individuals of all ages with disabilities.  Those requiring assistance must come with own aide.

Upcoming dates: August 6, October 1.

Dances and Bingo/Game Nights are held at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E. Southern Ave., Tempe (SW corner of Rural Rd. and Southern Ave.).

  LEAP After School Program  

Registration is currently being accepted!  Offered by the City of Tempe, the Life Skill Enrichment After School Program is for teens receiving Special Education services who attend Mt. Point, Tempe H.S., Corona, McClintock or Marcos de Niza during the 2010-11 school year.

The program’s primary focus is life skill enrichment for teens attending in the Tempe Unified School District, with the exception of Desert Vista H.S.  The program is held at Marcos De Niza High School and will include indoor and outdoor activities, such as arts & crafts, educational activities, card & board games, sports and others.

The program begins Monday, August 9, and is from the end of the school day until 6pm and is for the entire 2010-11 school year.  Late registration is accepted, but you must contact coordinator to ensure space is available.  For more information about the program and how to register please contact Josh Bell at 480.858.2469.

  Camp Challenge/Camp Action Kids 

Camp for 2010 has ended.  Thank you to everyone who was a part of making our camp so successful this year!  We look forward to camp returning in the summer of 2011!

This summer day camp is for children and adults ages 5-22 with developmental disabilities. Campers will participate in a variety of fun activities: arts and crafts, games, swimming, music, field trips, and bowling, as well as many other adventures. Camp is located at Bustoz Elementary School during the months of June and July.

Session One: June 8 (Tuesday) through July 1 Fee: $110*
Session Two: July 6 (Tuesday) through July 22 Fee: $90*
*Those using DDD services must contact their support coordinator prior to enrollment.

  Unified Bowling/Buddy Bowling League 

The last day of the current session of Buddy Bowling is Saturday, August 21.  Fall session registration has begun!

This is a fun unified sports program that provides a great way for athletes with and without disabilities to participate together.  Download registration form using the link posted below.  If you are interested in Special Olympics bowling, please see the Special Olympics section below.

Date/Time: 9:30am, Saturdays, September 11 - November 13
Who: 7+ years
Bowling Fee: $8 each week for 3 games, shoes and league prizes ($2 each week if absent)
Registration Fee: $20
