NOTICE UNDER THE AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was established to ensure inclusive and equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in all aspects of American life.  By breaking down and eliminating barriers, the ADA provides individuals with disabilities equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of community life.

The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.  Under the law,  the City of Tempe must ensure that its programs, services and activities are readily accessible and usable by qualified persons with disabilities.  As a public entity, the city will reasonably modify its policies, practices and procedures to ensure the full participation of everyone.

Employment: The City does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its hiring or employment practices and complies with all regulations promulgated by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Effective Communication: The City will provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services, including qualified sign language interpreters, assistive listening devices, and materials in alternate formats, whenever necessary to ensure effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities.

Modification to Policies and Procedures: The City will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all programs, services, and activities.

Requests for the above accommodations should be made as soon as possible to City staff in the appropriate department.

Complaints that a City program, service, or activity is not accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to the City's ADA Compliance Specialist Karl Stephens at (480) 350-2704.
